Celebrating

10
YEARS!

QUEENIEBROWNMAGAZINE.COM

for Today's Real Human BEING Extraordinary

We did it!

Queeniebrownmagazine.com has had a ten-year online presence - and we are still counting!

Ten years in business has been a test of resiliency, to say the least. It has forced us out of our comfort zone, taught us things we didn't know we didn't know, proven (to be) provocative, and has been rewarding in ways we cannot begin to count. If we were to describe the experience in one word, Exhilarating, would be that word.

Admittedly, there were days we thought about quitting, but with your continued support - push, on some of your parts - and a lot of determination, we are still here. Thank you for that.

People often ask us two questions; the first is, what our greatest pleasure has been working on queeniebrownmagazine.com.

Without a doubt, the answer is, receiving the privilege of entering someone's life: hearing about their inspirations, their hopes, and getting a glimpse into their dreams of creating positive change.

Every conversation with a feature proved inspiring.

Every conversation!

Zero had blown out oversize egos or broke their arms, patting themselves on the back. In fact, each feature was surprised by our interest in them, flattered that we sought them out and wanted to take the time to speak with them, and some were even a tad shy about receiving the attention. What a pleasure it was being granted the privilege of knowing them - even for just a short time. We will revisit a few of our previous features in this and up-coming issues, just to see what they have been up to since we last made contact.

The second question we have been asked is what our greatest challenge has been with queeniebrownmagazine.com.

As mentioned, we encounter people who are shy about being featured. The extreme to those folks are people - particularly women - who reject the offer of being recognized. It would surprise you to know the many behind the scenes "Bigging Up" their fellow community members and striving to make their neighbourhood a better place to live, who prefer to be - and remain!- behind the scenes. Instead of talking about what they have achieved, they rather take action. Instead of stopping for a moment to receive praise, they insist on continuing the work of encouraging, supporting, propelling forward or remembering others. This individual knows the tasks, goals, and effort required for accomplishing their dream, so they avoid "wasting time" talking about it. They feel the work "needs to be done" and what they do "is nothing out of the ordinary" (while their efforts are extraordinary, by the way).

The Challenge? Considering our goal (the reason queeniebrownmagazine.com was created) is to highlight such a person, it is tough accepting their decision to pass (on being celebrated).

We hope future issues will include more people, particularly women, willing to put their hesitation aside (if only for a moment) to acknowledge how exceptional they are. We promise to waste as little of their time as possible because we understand who they are. We understand who they are because our inspiration, Lilieth Brown Deans, was one of those people. She tirelessly worked to create excitement, entertainment, organization, achievement, recognition for others, too busy moving onto the next duty to receive a pat on the shoulder (she was also quite shy, by the way). It was only at the end of her life that she took a look back and said, "I did well. I lived a good life." We hope /were founded by her daughter to celebrate people like Lilieth. We hope MORE will let us.

Thank-you for all you have done. YOU are Today's Real Human BEING Extraordinary.

Put that in your heart and let it spread through your body, every day.

Rosemary
Today!

Renowned, recipient of the Order of Ontario, advocate for social justice, historian, speaker, consultant, author, Rosemary Sadlier (of Sadlier Communications) is, surly, a human being extraordinary.  Her works are feats that have taken decades of passion, dedication, perseverance and discipline to achieve.

If you read our May 31st, '22 edition, you will have read our feature on Ms. Sadlier. You may remember that Rosemary was the catalyst to Canada recognizing Black History Month - an act that occurred province by province, by the way. Also, Rosemary fought for the country-wide recognition of Emancipation Day, after achieving recognition municipally in 1994 then provincially in 2008.

Background: Emancipation Day is a celebration "marking the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire.
Government of Canada website This unanimous, nationwide, designation made in March 2021 was for the purpose of reflection, education and engagement in the ongoing fight against anti-Black and anti-Indigenous acts and discrimination. This recognition is necessary to remember the thousands of African and Indigenous slaves in the the southeastern portion of (present-day) Quebec and the Labrador region (then identified as Lower Canada) as well as what is now the southern portion of Ontario and the lands bordering Georgian Bay and Lake Superior (previously called Upper Canada).

Back to Rosemary, we are particularly thrilled by the number of honours she has deservedly received since our May '22 feature. The PinBall Clemons Foundation, for example, not only named Rosemary a mentor for their You(th) Lead Conference, last November, the foundation created a Bursary in her name to offer support to over one hundred thousand children in marginalized communities across 5 provinces.
Dang, impressive recognition.

Ms. Sadlier's honours don't slow her down, though. They seem only to mobilizer her on the path of leading, inspiring, and honouring those deserving our respect. Currently, Rosemary (along with the Linc Committee) anticipate the unveiling the late Honourable Lincoln Macauley Alexander bust. Mr. Alexander was a McMaster University and Osgoode Hall Law School graduate, King's Privy Council member, Order of Canada recipient, 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario (1985 to 1991) and Canada's first Black Cabinet Minister (Labour) to list a few of his accomplishments. After ensuring Lincoln Alexander Day was passed November 28, 2013, Rosemary and her committee worked to have this bust sit in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario near the entrance to the suite of the Lieutenant Governor. The bust will be part of the educational program and tours at Queen’s Park, honouring "Linc's" legacy as a positive role model for young people, especially Black and racialized youth.

LebronJames.webp

Writing books since 2009, and proving particularly prolific for the past four years, Lebron James, aka King James, has done it, again. As if his New York Times Bestseller, "I Promise," was not enough, King's most recent writing, Illustrated by Niña Mata, was put on paper for readers to remember they can accomplish their goals when they believe in themselves. Lebron's fifth - or is it his sixth? book is published by Harper Collins, and scheduled for release in April.

Speaking of prolific authors, Rosemary Sadlier's latest book, illustrated by Arden Taylor, can be pre ordered on Amazon with a release date of June 4th. This chronological recording of stories taking us through time from 1604 (when Mathieu Da Costa, the first known African to step foot in what is now Canada) to present day is indeed thought-provoking, if not just inspiring.

This updated version of Rosemary's bestselling and award-winning "The Kids Book of Black Canadian History (published in 2003) is a must-have for those who always wanted to know more about or desired a complete account of Canadian Black History.

Let Us Tell YOUR Story

If you love dolls, believe in celebrating culture, legacy, and maybe even have an idea for creating a toy of your own, you must check out Purpose Toys.

Purpose Toys is a fresh new approach to storytelling through toys, and is the first natural hair doll line in major retailers - internationally! Their goal is to deliver meaningful products to the market as an entrepreneur's pipeline to major retail. They accomplished this first through their natural coil and curl hair line then through the nation's first all Latina fashion doll line through their Latino-focused toy division.

Dang!

This genius idea and Herculean effort is

from the vision of NATURALISTAS/ LATINISTAS  Creator and CEO of Purpose Toys, DeeDee Wright-Ward. Her "Purpose-driven, CULTURE-driven, Mission-driven," Black-owned company, "quickly established a place in toy and retail history" since launching in 2020.

We particularly love Purpose Toys Naturalistas Pixie Puff collection which finally gives 4C curl kids fashion doll representation! The “Crown and Coils” Styling Head available on Amazon, helps to transport "older" kids back to their past when the only hairstyle head available to them was a blue-eyed blond one which was great for some classmates but less great for those with their afros or braids.

Speaking of story-telling, click here for an entertaining view of Purpose Toys Youtube channel. See their latest line, HBCyoU, Founded and created by entrepreneur, Brooke Hart Jones, to honour as well as encourage the Black education experience.

These dolls are available at Sam's Club, Walmart, Walmart Canada, Target, Macy's, CVS and as mentioned, Amazon. If you want to try your hand at some luck, each week of February they are giving their CROWN COMMUNITY a chance to win five (5) of their 11.5-inch Little ICONS.

American Airlines Now Flys to What Travel + Leisure Considers the 'Best-kept Secret' of the Bahamas

PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES.png

American Airlines now offers nonstop service to Eleuthera — an island touted as the best-kept secret in the Bahamas by Travel + Leisure.

On Saturday, Feb. 3, the airline inaugurated flying nonstop service to Governor’s Harbour Airport in Eleuthera from its major Miami hub, which serves as a gateway for all of its Caribbean and Latin American flights. The new Miami to Governor’s Harbour service will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays on a year-round basis.

Governor’s Harbour Airport has recently been renovated with upgraded arrival and departure facilities, which has allowed airlines like American to begin commercial service, according to The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

Eleuthera is a remote paradise famed for its luxury resorts and pink sands, and the capital, Governor’s Harbour, is situated in the middle of the 110-mile island. American also operates a twice-daily service between Miami and North Eleuthera Airport, which is one of three airports serving the entire island (in addition to Governor’s Harbour Airport and Rock Sound International Airport).

Supplementing the Governor’s Harbour and North Eleuthera, American also flies elsewhere in the Bahamas to Nassau, New Providence; Freeport, Grand Bahama; George Town, Exuma, and Marsh Harbour, Abaco.

"We are excited to celebrate the launch of our sixth destination in The Bahamas, Governor's Harbour, further strengthening our commitment to this unspoiled paradise,” said American’s managing director of operations for Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, José María Giraldo in a statement. This new route marks our next step as we continue to expand American's presence in the Caribbean and Atlantic, where we are proud to lead as the largest U.S. airline.”

American continues to ramp up its Caribbean routes, with up to 3x-daily flying from Miami to Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, and beyond. The airline also has plans for many new international flights this year, as American will begin flying from its main Dallas-Fort Worth hub to Brisbane and Rio de Janeirolater this year.

Something GOOD to Talk About

Trauma.

We have become well acquainted with that word of late, so much so that merely seeing it written could cause a quick intake of breath, tightening of the chest and an increased heart rate.

Everyone is traumatized, these days, and everyone is talking about it.

It's no wonder, though, because everywhere we go someone has something to say that... well... sucks.

We know turning the radio and television news on means setting ourselves up for horror - that's not including the latest tyrannical leaders' update on destroying their neighbouring relatives - that's simply the worst occurrences of the day or week or month(s) depending on the seriousness of the events. If we insist upon watching news reports as they air throughout the day, such information is compounded by our exposure to it.

If we take the people we encounter throughout the day telling us - shite, news reports (twice?) a day telling us shite, increased workloads, the price of gas, the cost of food, the shortage of homes, the cost of homes, climate change, kids still at home, caring for our parents, shite experiences from our childhood, our parent's shite experiences, their parent's shite experiences, what are we left shifting through all day, every day? No wonder we feel traumatized.

What do we think we are doing for our overall well-being?

As humans, we tend to be impacted more by negative events than by positive. https://positivepsychology.com/3-steps-negativity-bias/. The reason for that , we remember this information more vividly, actually learning and advancing because of negative events more than by positive events.

This learning, this stimulation, reinforces the desire for negative events or information in many of us. So much so that we become focused on them. We even begin to seek them out. This occurs because when we learn something, neurons from different brain regions communicate with each other through electrical signals. This communication creates connections known as pathways. With more exposure and practice over time, our brain creates stronger, more efficient (faster) communication between neurons, along the pathway. https://www.brainfacts.org/thinking-sensing-and-behaving/learning-and-memory/2023/how-does-the-brain-learn-101923#:~:text=Thus%2C%20when%20we%20learn%20something,different%20areas%20of%20the%20brain.

This process has been explained as the ruts created on a dirt road that get deeper and more ingrained with each passing tire. The amount of exposure and practice can help transform that dirt road into a paved road, highway then even into a super-highway. Hence, the saying practice makes perfect. This process also works pertaining to gloom-ridden practices. Brain cells actually physically change based on strong, reinforced pathways. Our brains actually change with our experiences.

Our focus on or seeking out of negative information is what scientists call Negative Bias. They believe Negative Bias is an adaptive evolutionary function stemming from our ancestors' responses to environmental threats.

Makes sense. People who were able to respond (quicker/ more effectively) to threats developed a sharpened "awareness" that contributed to their survival. As their descendants, we gained that instinct. Since the threats that existed in the time of our ancestors (like tigers pouncing from bushes to make a meal out of us) no longer exist, our need for this proclivity is far less. Due to this reason, our tendency is to seek out threats (as if cons, thieves, rapists, murderers, narcissists, disease, deadly creatures, natural disasters, et al are not enough).

So, if we are not fairing well swimming in all life's sludge, what can we do?

Understanding that our Negative Bias is natural, may prove helpful. There is nothing wrong with us "Looking for Trouble" or "Chasing Drama," it is actually normal behaviour.

Also, as diminishing as this may sound, realizing that everyone is traumatized to some degree or another - 'cause zero childhoods were 100% positive - is added help. We are not alone in our emotional dysregulation stemming from pain, disappointments, invalidation and mistreatment - trauma exposure. We can validate ourselves, pull ourselves out of our trauma traps, and accept that we are not competing for "most traumatized experience" recognition - all the while validating our experiences and reaction to them (because no amount of external validation can challenge internal invalidation). Extending compassion toward those who experienced severe, chronic, overwhelming, destabilizing (with altered neurobiological gene markers) childhood trauma can be healing. As we want others to see (then sooth) our suffering (because soothing is ultimately our desire, right?), we can help ourselves by acknowledging others. When we learn to self-sooth, we have the greatest capacity to help others.

Reminding ourselves that we are a resilient species who have inherited the gene to kick adversity's ass when necessary is a substantial truth. The thrill of finding horror may make us feel "better," but, does it really? Besides, life will throw enough obstacles in our way to leap, walk around or burst through.

Life may appear like a page from Cuckoo's Nest, but, creating our own personal domain in our home, on a walk, in the car before entering the house! is worth it. Remember, our brains continue to be moulded by experience and learning throughout our lives. Maybe we should take a lesson from our Gen Z's and chill more. Let's nourish ourselves with positive, revitalizing, awe-inspiring information that will change our brains (then our bodies) into our most exceptional selves.
